Application Description:
Fiber Channel is a bidirectional point-to-point serial data link with a high-performance transmission structure.
In order to allow low-cost interconnection between supercomputers and high-end peripherals, the ANSI X3T9.5 FC-0 committee designated coaxial interconnection as an alternative to fiber optic cables.
Although the transmission distance through alternative cables is limited, it has significant cost advantages compared to fiber optic interfaces.
Pulse has designed fiber channel dual transformers specifically for point-to-point coupling of coaxial cables. This transformer series complies with the ANSI X3T9.5 FC-0 specification and has data rates exceeding 133, 266, and 531Mbps on coaxial cables, with distances up to 100 meters.
The isolation transformer protects the site from the influence of static charges that may be generated on the cable and prevents the transmission of grounding circuit currents between sites. When using a coaxial link, the transformer also provides balance for the single ended connection between the sending/receiving IC and the coaxial cable. The device is also designed to provide common mode suppression within the transmission frequency band, thereby reducing electromagnetic interference.
The broadband width of these devices minimizes data related jitter by providing fast signal rise time.
In addition, using appropriate transformers will provide sufficient low-end bandwidth to minimize baseline drift and jitter from another contributor. The low-end bandwidth is a function of channel impedance and transformer primary inductance. The selection table on the front of this data sheet matches appropriate transformers with different cables and WData rates. Each coaxial cable has a characteristic impedance of 75.
Dual encapsulation allows for the connection of sending and receiving channels, as shown in the application circuit below. Surface mount packaging provides an economical and effective solution, while providing over -40dB of crosstalk attenuation in the 800mhz range. Transformers can be packaged in tubes or magnetic tapes&reels.
